Fraud against the elderly is on the rise, according to a report by law enforcement officials in North Carolina.
The use of the Internet and increased wealth of retirees has triggered an increase of the elderly being deliberately targeted.
According to the report, these retiree specific frauds include sophisticated, international telemarketing check and sweepstake schemes and Internet based identity theft through spam emails and the illegally acquisition of usernames, passwords, and credit card details by pretending to represent a trustworthy organization.
Other tactics include “sweetheart scams,” where fraudsters befriend a widow or widower and promises love, and local home repair scams where elderly homeowners are convinced they need to undertake needless repairs.
